Do you need this assessment?

Most bariatric surgeons in Australia require a psychological assessment before proceeding with surgery. This assessment provides a written report for your surgical team confirming your psychological readiness and suitability for the procedure.

What the assessment involves

The assessment typically takes place across one to two sessions. There is no pass or fail — the purpose is to ensure you have a clear understanding of the procedure, that any relevant psychological factors are identified and addressed, and that your surgeon has the information they need.

Sessions cover:

• Your relationship with food and eating
• Your understanding of the procedure and what to expect
• Your motivations and goals for surgery
• Your support network and overall wellbeing
• Any mental health history relevant to your surgical journey
• Your expectations for life after surgery

The report

Following the assessment, I’ll prepare a written report meeting the requirements of your surgical team. If your surgeon has provided specific requirements for the report’s content or format, please share these when you book and I’ll ensure they’re addressed.

A note on the process

I approach this assessment with genuine curiosity and without judgement about your history or your decision. You don’t need to prove anything. My role is to understand your situation clearly and represent it accurately.

Fees and timing

Fees vary depending on the level of reporting required. Current pricing is available on the Fees page.

The assessment is conducted via telehealth. Sessions are typically scheduled over one to two weeks. Reports are generally ready within two weeks of your final session.

Medicare rebates are not available for this assessment. Private health insurance may cover part of the cost depending on your fund and level of cover.
