Cosmetic Procedure Readiness
A psychological assessment to evaluate your mental health readiness and suitability for cosmetic surgery or procedures.
Understanding the assessment
Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, it’s important to explore your motivations, expectations, and emotional wellbeing. This goes beyond a simple checklist – it ensures you’re mentally and emotionally prepared for the procedure and that your decision aligns with realistic expectations and healthy motivations.
In Australia, psychological assessments are required for specific cosmetic procedures under guidelines introduced by the Medical Board of Australia and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as of July 1st, 2023. These requirements enhance patient safety and wellbeing by ensuring your decision is informed, realistic, and made for healthy reasons while identifying any psychological factors that may affect your surgical outcomes or recovery.
What does the assessment involve?
Here’s what to expect at each stage of the process:
Pre-Session questionnaires
Complete online forms about your medical history, mental health background, body image concerns, and specific reasons for seeking the procedure. This helps your psychologist understand your background, motivations, and goals.
Assessment session
Meet with me online via video-conference to talk through your expectations, self-image, and emotional readiness. You’ll also discuss past experiences and current supports, in a respectful and non-judgemental space.
Report for your surgeon
Following the session, your psychologist will prepare a comprehensive written report outlining your psychological readiness for the procedure. This report is provided to your treating practitioner as part of the clearance process and includes specific recommendations regarding your suitability and any support needs.
Why is this assessment important?
Cosmetic procedures can be life-changing, but they require careful consideration. This mandatory assessment helps ensure you:
- Understand the risks and limitations of the procedure
- Have realistic expectations of outcomes
- Are emotionally prepared for post-operative changes
- Are making the decision for yourself and not under external pressure or during emotional distress
- Can identify and address any mental health concerns, particularly body dysmorphic disorder
- Meet the legal requirements to proceed with your chosen procedure
What if concerns are identified?
If the assessment identifies psychological concerns or contraindications, you may be referred for further evaluation or treatment before any cosmetic procedure can proceed. This might include therapeutic support or addressing specific mental health issues. The goal is always to support your wellbeing and ensure the best possible outcomes.
How long does it take?
The process typically includes one 60–90 minute clinical session online via video-conference, plus time for completing standardised questionnaires and report preparation. Timeframes may vary depending on individual circumstances and your surgeon’s specific requirements.
When is this assessment required?
This comprehensive psychological assessment is required for major cosmetic surgical procedures, patients under 18, or when initial screening identifies potential concerns that need specialised evaluation.
Next Steps
If cleared, you’ll receive approval to proceed with recommendations for optimal preparation. If concerns are identified, I will provide guidance on addressing these before moving forward, always prioritising your psychological wellbeing and best outcomes.
