Do you need this assessment?
Most surgeons in Australia require an assessment and report from a mental health professional before proceeding with gender-affirming surgery. This assessment provides a written report to support your surgical referral.
What the assessment involves
The assessment typically takes place across three sessions. There is no pass or fail — the purpose is to ensure you have adequate support around your decision, that any relevant mental health factors are identified and addressed, and that your surgeon has the information they need.
Sessions cover:
- Your gender history and experience
- Your understanding of the procedure and what to expect
- Your support network and overall wellbeing
- Any mental health history relevant to your surgical journey
- Your goals and expectations for life after surgery
The report
Following the assessment, I’ll prepare a written report meeting the requirements of your surgical team. If your surgeon has provided specific requirements for the report’s content or format, please share these when you book and I’ll ensure they’re addressed.
A note on the process
I have experience working with gender diverse clients and understand the significance of this process. You won’t need to educate me on the basics.
I approach this assessment the same way I approach all clinical work — with genuine curiosity and respect for your experience. You don’t need to prove anything or present yourself in a particular way. My role is to understand your situation clearly and represent it accurately.
Fees and timing

The assessment is conducted via telehealth. Sessions are typically scheduled over two to three weeks. Reports are generally ready within two to three weeks of your final session.
Medicare rebates are not available for this assessment. Private health insurance may cover part of the cost depending on your fund and level of cover.
